He had been a partisan under General Wayne, in his Indian wars, where he had distinguished himself by his fiery spirit and reckless daring, and marvelous stories were told of his exploits.

His appearance answered to his character.

His frame was meagre, but muscular; showing strength, activity, and iron firmness.

His eyes were dark, deep-set, and piercing.

He was restless, fearless, but of impetuous and sometimes ungovernable temper.
