The sentry had been tomahawked as he stood at arms at the gate; and the sergeant of the little company was killed while working in the garden of the garrison outside the stockade.
When night fell Paully and two or three others, all that remained of the garrison, were placed in canoes, and these were headed for Detroit.

As the prisoners looked back over the calm waters of Sandusky Bay, they saw the blockhouse burst into flames.
