The Protestant militia were disarmed, a Catholic army was formed; the corporations were thrown open to Catholics.

Dublin and other corporations, which refused to surrender their exclusive charters, were summarily deprived of their privileges; Catholic mayors and sheriffs, escorted by troops, went in state to their places of worship.

The Protestant chancellor was dismissed to make way for a Catholic, Baron Rice.

The plate of Trinity College was seized as public property.

The Protestants, thoroughly alarmed by these arbitrary proceedings, fled to England in thousands.
