The accession of James II.

was well calculated to have an intoxicating effect on the Irish race.

He was a Catholic, he undertook to effect a counter-reformation.

He would restore the national hierarchy to the position from which it had been dragged down and trampled under the feet of the Cromwellians.

He would give back to the Irish gentry and nobility their estates; and to effect this glorious revolution, he relied upon the faith and valour of the Irish.
