He mounted into the carriage; Bernenstein and I followed, with bare heads, and sat on the back seat, facing him.

The people were round as thick as bees, and it seemed as though we could not move without crushing somebody.

Yet presently the wheels turned, and they began to drag us away at a slow walk.

Rudolf kept raising his hat, bowing now to right, now to left.

But once, as he turned, his eyes met ours.
