Bates was then despatched to Tresham; and preparations were made by the three lay conspirators for executing their fell design.
It was agreed, that on his arrival, Tresham should be seized and disarmed, and after being interrogated by Catesby touching the extent of his treachery, should be stabbed by Guy Fawkes.

This being resolved upon, it became a question how they should act in the interim.
