The selfish woman is self-blinded.

She often has great powers of discernment, but will not take the trouble to use them, unless prompted by her own interests.

Selfishness is too short-sighted, however, to secure lasting benefits.

Usually, nothing is more fatal than the success of mere self-seeking.

While Madge pressed unwaveringly toward the goal of her hopes, she did not do so in thoughtless or callous indifference toward those who had true claims upon her.
