"Who is he?
Do you know his name ?" "No," answered Gabriel.

"His name, no.

But I remember him, well enough.
He's the larger of the two detectives I knocked out, in that room in Rochester.

Beside his pay, he's got a personal motive in landing me back in 'stir,' or sending me 'up the escape,' as prison slang names a penitentiary and a death.

So then," he added, "what's the first thing?
Where shall I go, and how, to hide and metamorphose?
I'm in your hands, now, Kate.
