His fortune was speedily augmented by an opulent marriage.

Interest was his sole inducement to this marriage, though the lady had been swayed by a credulous affection.

The true state of his heart was quickly discovered, and a separation, by mutual consent, took place.

The lady withdrew to an estate in a distant county, and Maxwell continued to consume his time and fortune in the dissipation of the capital.
Maxwell, though deceitful and sensual, possessed great force of mind and specious accomplishments.

He contrived to mislead the generous mind of Stuart, and to regain the esteem which his misconduct, for a time, had forfeited.
