This seemed to mark the progress of the King; for, as he came opposite each house, these actions became most violent, with cries of _'Vivent les Bourbons!' 'Vive le Roi!' 'Vive Louis!'_ etc.

One carriage appeared, drawn by six horses, decorated with ribbons, and containing some of the French _noblesse;_ another, of the same description, with some of the French royal family.

At length came a carriage drawn by eight beautiful Arabian cream-colored horses.

In this were seated Louis XVIII, King of France, the Prince Regent of England, the Duchesse d'Angouleme, daughter of Louis XVI, and the Prince of Conde.
They passed rather quickly, so that I had but a glance at them, though a distinct one.

The Prince Regent I had often seen before; the King of France I had a better sight of afterwards, as I will presently relate.
The Duchesse d'Angouleme had a fine expression of countenance, owing probably to the occasion, but a melancholy cast was also visible through it; she was pale.
