The disparity is in itself monumental.

That Michelangelo's Madonna and Child are on the slab which covers the dust of Lorenzo and his brother is a chance.

The saints on either side are S.Cosimo and S.Damian, the patron saints of old Cosimo de' Medici, and are by Michelangelo's assistants.

The Madonna was intended for the altar of the sacristy.

Into this work the sculptor put much of his melancholy and, one feels, disappointment.
