But through the office window we could see the man we wanted.

He was accompanied by one of the proprietors of the mill, turning over the relief books of the ward.

I soon found that he had a strong sense of humour, as well as a heart welling over with tenderness.

He pointed to some of the cases in his books.

The first was that of an old man, an overlooker of a cotton mill.
