On the 31st March we were entertained at dinner by Mr.Crowther (Member of the Legislative Council for the district) at the Geraldton Hotel.

It was from that point we considered the expedition really commenced, and my Journal will show that we numbered our camps from that place.

Our final start was not effected without some trouble.

The horses, happily ignorant of the troubles which awaited them, were fresh and lively, kicking, plunging, and running away, so that it was noon before we were fairly on the move.

Our first day's journey brought us to a place named Knockbrack, the hospitable residence of Mr.Thomas Burges, where we remained two days, the 3rd being Good Friday.
