Here you are!" He pressed a gold piece into the man's hand. The coachman nodded, muttered something, gave his horse a needless cut with the whip, and turned the carriage round.
When they drove back through the village, all the houses were dark.
A little farther on, the coachman was about to turn into the by-road leading up the gentle ascent to Olivo's house. "Halt!" cried Casanova.
