He took Allister from Kirsty, and we sped away, for it was all downhill now.

When Mrs.Mitchell got back to the farmhouse, Kirsty was busy as if nothing had happened, and when, after a fruitless search, she returned to the manse, we were all snug in bed, with the door locked.

After what had passed about the school, Mrs.Mitchell did not dare make any disturbance.
From that night she always went by the name of _the Kelpie_..
