His pale face was crossed with a purple stream of blood that trickled from a wound beside his eyebrow; his arms lay motionless and heavily at either side.

I knew him not.

A loud report of a pistol aroused me from my stupor; I looked back.

I saw a crowd that broke suddenly asunder and fled right and left.

I heard a heavy crash upon the ground; I pointed with my finger, for I could not utter a word.
"It is the English mare, yer honor; she was a beauty this morning, but she's broke her shoulder-bone and both her legs, and it was best to put her out of pain.".
