But he's not going to be the ordinary labourer, Mr.Grieve--he's made of quite different stuff, and, if I may say so, it will pay you very well to recognise it in good time.
That boy will read books now which hardly any grown man of his class--about here, at any rate--would be able to read.

'Oh! it's not only that.

But he's got an unusual brain and a wonderful memory.

And it would be a thousand pities if he were to make nothing of them.

You say he's useful, but--excuse me, Mr.
Grieve--he seems to me to spend three parts of his time in loafing and desultory reading.
