Captain Cook was struck with admiration, when he surveyed the beauty and cultivation of the island.
He thought himself transported into the most fertile plains of Europe.
There was not an inch of waste ground. The roads occupied no larger a space than was absolutely necessary, and the fences did not take up above four inches each.
Even such a small portion of ground was not wholly lost; for many of the fences themselves contained useful trees or plants.
