He had, indeed, some thoughts of protracting his course a little longer, for the sake of revisiting the place where the French discovery is said to be situated.
But, upon mature deliberation, he determined to lay aside his intention.
He considered, that if this discovery had really been made, the end would be as fully answered, as if it had been done by himself.
It could only be an island; and, if a judgment might be formed from the degree of cold which our voyagers had experienced in that latitude, it could not be a fertile one.
Besides, our commander would hereby have been kept two months longer at sea, and that in a tempestuous latitude, with which the ship was not in a condition to struggle.
