It seems to be entirely composed of rocky mountains, without the least appearance of vegetation.
These mountains terminate to horrible precipices, the craggy summits of which spire up to a vast height; so that scarcely any thing in nature can appear with a more barren and savage aspect, than the whole of the country. The run which Captain Cook had made directly across the ocean in a high southern latitude, was believed by him to be the first of the kind that had ever been carried into execution.
He was, therefore, somewhat particular in remarking every circumstance which seemed to be in the least material.
However, he could not but observe, that he had never made a passage any where, of such length, or even of a much shorter extent, in which so few things occurred, that were of an interesting nature.
Excepting the variation of the compass, he knew of nothing else that was worthy of notice.
