Accordingly, two vessels, both of which had been built at Whitby, by the same person who built the Endeavour, were purchased of Captain William Hammond, of Hull.
They were about fourteen or sixteen months old at the time when they were bought, and in Captain Cook's judgment, were as well adapted to the intended service as if they had been expressly constructed for that purpose.
The largest of the two, which consisted of four hundred and sixty-two tons burden, was named the Resolution.
To the other, which was three hundred and thirty-six tons burden, was given the name of the Adventure.
On the 28th of November, 1771, Captain Cook was appointed to the command of the former; and, about the same time, Mr.Tobias Furneaux was promoted to the command of the latter.
