At eight o'clock in the evening of this day, the ship came to an anchor in five fathom, with a fine sandy bottom.
Early in the morning of the next day, the lieutenant, accompanied by Mr. Banks, Dr.Solander, the other gentlemen, Tupia, and a party of men, went on shore in order to examine the country.
The wind blew fresh, and the weather was so cold, that being at a considerable distance from land, they took their cloaks as a necessary equipment for the voyage.
When they landed, they found a channel leading into a large lagoon.
Both the channel and the lagoon were examined by our commander with his usual accuracy.
