A single man may risk anything, says the world; but a man with a wife should be sure of his means.

Why so?
A man and a woman are but two units.

A man and a woman with ten children are but twelve units.

It is sad to see a man starving--sad to see a woman starving--very sad to see children starving.

But how often does it come to pass that the man who will work is seen begging his bread?
we may almost say never--unless, indeed, he be a clergyman.
