This letter, though it expressed in the usual terms the satisfaction which one friend has in another's welfare, was not written in the same warm affectionate tone as that to Norman.

Alaric perceived instantly that it was not cordial.

He loved Mrs.Woodward dearly, and greatly desired her love and sympathy.

But what then?
He could not have everything.

He determined, therefore, not to trouble his mind.
