That's all for you, Master Norman.

Well, I suppose we may all go in and get ready; but mind, I have got no sweetheart, and so I shan't make myself grand at all;' and so they all went in to dress for dinner.
When Norman came down, Gertrude was in the drawing-room alone.
But he knew that they would be alone but for a minute, and that a minute would not serve for his purpose.

She said one soft gentle word of condolence to him, some little sentence that she had been studying to pronounce.

All her study was thrown away; for Norman, in his confusion, did not understand a word that she spoke.

Her tone, however, was kind and affectionate; and she shook hands with him apparently with cordiality.
