She wished the small romance of Rex's devotion to fill up the time of his stay at Pennicote, and to avoid explanations which would bring it to an untimely end.

Besides, she objected, with a sort of physical repulsion, to being directly made love to.

With all her imaginative delight in being adored, there was a certain fierceness of maidenhood in her.
But all other thoughts were soon lost for her in the excitement of the scene at the Three Barns.

Several gentlemen of the hunt knew her, and she exchanged pleasant greetings.

Rex could not get another word with her.
