He was gradually sinking under the power of invading sleep.

Every now and then he would come to himself for the briefest instant, and say he must seek some shelter.

The next moment he was asleep again.

He had often wondered that horses could get over the road and sleep: here he was doing it himself and not wondering at all! The wind rose, and blew sharp stings of rain in his face, which woke him up a little.

He looked about him.
