Never min' yer sheep.' His last words came from the distance, for he never stayed a step while he spoke.
"Mary got up at once.

But you may be sure, my lady, a girl like that was not going to leave her sheep where she dared not stop herself.

She began to gather them together to take them out of harm's way, and was just setting out with them for home, when a creature like a huge dog came bounding upon her out of the edge of the night.

The same instant, up from behind a rock, a few yards away, jumped Alister, and made at the beast with his crook; and just as the wolf was upon Mary, for Alister was not near enough to get between the beast and her, he heaved a great blow at him, which would have knocked him down anyhow.
