He found him still asleep in his chair before the fire; but he could not be left there through such a night, for the fire would go out, and then a pack of wolves would hardly be worse than the invading cold.

It was by no means an easy task to rouse him, however, and indeed remained in large measure unaccomplished--so far so, that, after with much labour and contrivance relieving him of his coat and boots, the laird had to satisfy his hospitality with getting him into bed in the remainder of his clothes.

He then heaped fresh fuel on the fire, put out the candles, and left him to what repose there might be for him.
Returning to his chair and his book, the laird read for another hour, and then went to bed.

His room was in the same block, above that of his mother..
