A heavy battery crowned one of the hills, another was posted in a forest, and there were more guns between.

Harry saw that the position was strong, and he noted with amazement that the Northern forces did not seem to outnumber Jackson's.

It was evident that Shields, with the majority of his force was not yet up.

He glanced at Jackson.

He knew that the fact could not have escaped the general, but he saw no trace of exultation on his face.
There was another fact that Harry did not then know.
