Granvelle begged the King, however, to disabuse them upon this point.

"Would to God," said he, piously, "that they all would decide to sustain the authority of your Majesty, and to procure such measures as tend to the service of God and the security of the states.

May I cease to exist if I do not desire to render good service to the very least of these gentlemen.

Your Majesty knows that, when they do any thing for the benefit of your service, I am never silent.

Nevertheless, thus they are constituted.
