"Come, come!" said Hanaud gently, "calm yourself, mademoiselle." Helene Vauquier paused for a moment or two to recover her composure.

"I beg your pardon, monsieur, but I have been so long with madame--oh, the poor woman! Yes, yes, I will calm myself.
