He told David that if he would work for Mr.Wilson until his wages paid that sum, he would then release him from all his obligations to his father, and his son might go free.

It was a shrewd bargain for the old man, for he had already learned that David was abundantly capable of taking care of himself, and that he would come and go when and where he pleased.
The boy, weary of his wanderings, consented to the arrangement, and engaged to work for Mr.Wilson for six months, in payment for which, the note was to be delivered up to his father.

It was characteristic of David that whatever he undertook he engaged in with all his might.

He was a rude, coarse boy.

It was scarcely possible, with his past training, that he should be otherwise.
