His first step was to plunge his head into water, and then, after a good wash, to prepare a meal.

His sleep had restored his energy, and with brisk steps he made his way through the streets to Louise Moulin.

He knocked with his knuckles at the outer door of her apartments.

The old nurse opened it quietly.
"Come in," she said, "and sit down.

They are in their room, and I think they have cried themselves to sleep.
