He threw back the green blinds and opened the window a little.

Once more the easy wind brought him that odor of the far south, whether reality or fancy he could not say.
But he turned to another window and looked toward the north.

Away from the others and away from a subtle persuasiveness that had been in the air, some of his doubts returned.

It would not all be so easy.

What were they doing in the far states beyond the Ohio?
He heard footsteps in the hail and a voice that seemed familiar.
He had left his door partly open, and, when he turned, he caught a glimpse of a face that he knew.
