Harry was conscious even then that he was in the presence of General Jackson.
The boy delivered his message.

Jackson received it without comment, never taking his eyes from the battle, which was now raging so fiercely in front of them.

Behind came his great brigade of Virginians, the smoke and flame of the battle entering their blood and making their hearts pound fast as they moved forward with increasing speed.
Harry rode back with the young officers of his staff, and now they saw men dash out of the smoke and run toward them.

They cried that everything was lost.

The lip of Jackson curled in contempt.
