I heard some one calling to them not to fire into us, and seeing Colonel Carrol, reported to him, and was told to go out and meet them, and caution them as to our position, we being between them and the enemy.

I did so, speaking to Colonel Roosevelt.

I also told him we were under orders not to advance, and asked him if he had received any orders.

He replied that he was going to charge the Spanish trenches.

I told this to Colonel Carrol, and to Captain Dimmick, our squadron commander.
